5 things you think you must do in birth — but you dont

Labor is full of myths and “shoulds” that can make birth feel overwhelming or stressful — but the truth is, you have more control than you think. 💛

Here are 5 things people often believe they must do in birth — but actually, you don’t:

1️⃣ Rush to the hospital at the first contraction – Early labor can be long, and arriving too soon can add stress and interventions. It’s okay to rest, hydrate, and wait until your body is ready.

2️⃣ Agree to every intervention automatically – Interventions like induction, continuous monitoring, or certain medications are options, not rules. You get to ask questions, understand the why, and make informed choices.

3️⃣ Push on your back– There’s no one-size-fits-all. Squatting, side-lying, hands-and-knees, or using a birth stool are all valid. Find what works for your body.

4️⃣ Follow someone else’s timeline – Your labor is yours. Comparing to friends, family, or what you read online can create unnecessary pressure. Trust your body’s pace.

5️⃣ Ignore your instincts or preferences – You know your body best. Your choices matter. Speak up, advocate for yourself, and let your support team help you feel heard.

Birth is your experience — no one else’s. 💛 You don’t have to follow rules that don’t fit your needs. With the right guidance, support, and information, you can navigate labor confidently, connected to your body and your baby.
